Every Time We Sleep We Die
What is “I”? Clearly, rebuilding one’s brain to be atomically equal will not transfer one’s consciousness to the second body. There will be a split: two different consciousnesses.
What about teleportation that transfers our brain to another place atom by atom? Will that transfer consciousness, or will it kill the old one and create a new one? What if we try, somehow, to turn our brain off and then turn it on again on the same “hardware”? Will that still be the same consciousness? We can’t check it. From the outer perspective, all these cases will look like nothing happened to one.
So, what if? What if our personality dies every time we go to sleep? All our memories could be injected into the new consciousness when we wake up. And that cycle is continued indefinitely. No one is panicking because it feels normal to go to bed. For me, it’s just an interesting way to think about it. That’s why I got the idea to talk to the ‘next me’ in my daily notes.
